Right after the launching of Gao’s new book – “Nhat ky son moi”, Thichdocsach (a fan page on Facebook for Vietnamese book-lovers) launched a campaign to promote itself with this book. The rule are:
- You need to like this Page.
- You need to post the link of this event into (more than) 15 friends’s wall.
- Write a notification to the wall of Thichdocsach after doing 2 steps above.
As an observer, my first thought is they (Thichdocsach) are trying to “buy” new fans with this hot book. This tactic is not new at all but maybe Gao’s book fits with their audience and they can gain many fans after this campaign. The problem here is how they can recognize the winner? Programmatically, they can know whether someone is their fan or not but how they can know this guy posted event’s link to his/her friends’ wall? You have only two ways to do this :
- Write an application and share the link over this application.
- You need to mention Thichdocsach by using @Thichdocsach in the link posted on your friend’s wall (this way isn’t good because the admin will have to count it manually but at least they can count it).
They didn’t use any mechanism I talk above and the results are many of their fans post this link to their friends’ wall, many of their fans write notifications (that they are done), many of their fans wait … wait … wait and then many of their fans are disappointing. In additional, they didn’t have any limit (top 10, top 20, top 100… fans will have the prize). It sounded like everybody can have Gao’s book and we can use Gao’s book to “buy” any 15 fans !!! (*^%$&$(*$)*(*&_(^(%)
The disappointment is continuing because suddenly and silently Thichdocsach arranges an offline to give 5-10 Gao’s books to the winners. The others (the losers – did complete Thichdocsach requirements but didn’t receive any book) are angry.
Ironically, the story ended in a peaceful (and little bit childish) way. Thichdocsach didn’t gain many fans (and their campaign wasn’t succeeded) but gained many complaints. My 2 cents here is don’t try to control your audience (because you can’t do it), try to control yourself with clear and transparent actions!!! Sometimes, don’t do anything is better than do the bad thing!!!
